POSITION TITLE:        PARAEDUCATOR – SPECIAL EDUCATION (GENERAL)
 
PURPOSE:
To serve as an integral member of the instructional team to provider services to individual student(s) in accordance with the goals/objectives identified by the Individual Education Plan (IEP).

STUDENT SUPPORT DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Work with individual students or small groups of students, under the supervision of a certified teacher, to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
• Collect data on student progress, under the direction of the teacher, for individual students or groups of students.
• Follow student schedule(s), as written by certified staff, i.e. administrators, teachers, related service providers, etc. and seek clarification as needed.
• Assist the teacher in the handling, operation, and care of equipment used in the classroom, including media and instructional materials.
• Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assembles, play periods, field trips, and in other non-classroom activities.
• Support with implementation of goals and objectives (IEP) as assigned by certified staff, and maintain strict confidentiality of the same.
• Foster independence in students through implementation of Independence goal(s) and other strategies
• Assist with daily living needs, such as feeding and bathroom accommodations.
• Assist with organization and on-task behavior
• Implement behavior intervention plans under the direction of a certified staff member.
• Serve as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
• Assist with implementation of Health Care plans for students and other medical needs.
• Alert the teacher(s) regarding any problem or special information related to an individual student.
• Help students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by teacher.
• Assist other students in an inclusion classroom.
GENERAL/ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Participate in professional development training programs, as required.
• Perform other related duties, as assigned.
• Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and sensitivity of information about students as is expected of a certified teacher.
• Exhibit a clear understanding of the IEP information as it pertains to their role as an implementer.
• Distribute and collect workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction as needed.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions effectively.
• Exhibits proficiency in basic reading, math, writing, and speaking English.
• Must possess or be willing to acquire the skills necessary to work productively with children.
• Appropriate reading, spelling, writing, and math skills to support student.
• Physical condition commensurate with the demands of, at a minimum, the essential functions of the position.

MINIMUM Qualifications:
• Must follow the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requirements and have passed the ParaPro Assessment, hold an Associate’s Degree, or have completed at least 60 credits at an approved college
• Must possess or be willing to acquire the skills necessary to support any specialized programs for Special Needs students, including support of behavioral plans, strategies for autism or other identified diagnoses, or support for treatments such as ABA or activities of daily living such as feeding and toileting.
• Experience/training in working with children preferred.
• Comfort with use of standard computer applications.
• Such additions and alternatives to the above qualifications as may be appropriate and acceptable.

CORE - Creating Opportunities for Readiness and Exploration
Designed for students have challenges with intellectual functioning, social skills, and daily living skills. CORE classrooms have at least one teacher, three paraeducators, and up to 8 students.   Students are assigned to both their CORE classroom and a general education classroom in order to ensure growth and development in the areas of social pragmatics, participation in school activities, and activities of daily living.  Related service supports include BCBA, speech and language, occupational therapy, social skills, and physical therapy.

PARAEDUCATOR – SPECIAL EDUCATION -  CORE 
 
PURPOSE:
To serve as an integral member of the student support team to provide services to students in accordance with the goals/objectives identified by the Individual Education Plan (IEP) in programs for students in specialized programs, including those with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), with the overarching goal of promoting student independence and autonomy.

GENERAL STATEMENT:
Stamford Public Schools is excited to offer professional development opportunities through CT State Personnel Development Grant (SPDG) at Newfield and KT Murphy.  The SPDG is a US Department of Education discretionary/competitive grant given to state education agencies to reform/improve their systems for personnel preparation and professional development of individuals providing early intervention, educational, and transition services to students with disabilities. 
The primary objectives of the Connecticut SPDG are to:
• Increase capacity of educators to develop appropriately ambitious IEP goals in mathematics 
• Strengthen collaboration among IEP team members to facilitate consistent progress monitoring
• Increase capacity of educators, special education and general education, to implement research-validated mathematics practices to provide explicit instruction for students with disabilities that leads to educational benefit. 
Selected candidates will serve in a coaching role within their school and will:
• Design and lead  communities of practice for teachers to increase the use of research-validated strategies in math instruction and provide feedback to colleagues on implementation of those strategies
• Support colleagues in collaborating in IEP development and progress monitoring
• Participate in IEP quality review and participate in educational benefit review (in year two). 
  •  Each school will be assigned a RESC mathematics coach and a RESC special education coach to support both the general education and special education coaches.  Coaches will work with up to 10 elementary teachers per building.

Coaches will be expected to work outside the contractual school day in order to effectively meet the intended goals of the grant with stipends provided to support this work.  Some events (such as Coaching COPs) will be scheduled at a common time for all cohort district coaches (virtual meetings, Sept – June, 1x/month, Wed 1:15-3:15 pm)

PARTICIPANT REQUIREMENTS: Participants selected must commit to remain with SPS for the two school years of training (2025-2026 and 2026-2027 school years) plus the two school years following completion of this program (2027-2028 and 2028-2029 school years).  Failure to remain with SPS will result in the participant being required to reimburse the district for a prorated portion of the training cost as outlined in the MOA between the Stamford BOE and the SEA.

COMPENSATION: 
Coaches: - One coach in mathematics and one coach in special education for each building (KT Murphy and Newfield) = $2500/year plus stipend ($2000) to attend all five days of the Summer Institute.
Reimbursement for hotel accommodations will be provided along with daily meal reimbursement, and mileage.

• Follow student schedule(s), as written by certified staff, i.e. administrators, teachers, related service providers, etc. and seek clarification as needed.
• Assist the teacher in the handling, operation, and care of equipment used in the classroom, including media and instructional materials.
• Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assembles, play periods, field trips, and in other non-classroom activities.
• Support with implementation of goals and objectives (IEP) as assigned by certified staff, and maintain strict confidentiality of the same.
• Foster independence in students through implementation of Independence goal(s) and other strategies
• Assist with daily living needs, such as feeding and bathroom accommodations.
• Assist with organization and on-task behavior
• Implement behavior intervention plans under the direction of a certified staff member.
• Serve as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
• Assist with implementation of Health Care plans for students and other medical needs.
• Alert the teacher(s) regarding any problem or special information related to an individual student.
• Help students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by teacher.
• Assist other students in an inclusion classroom.

MINIMUM Qualifications:
• Must follow the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requirements and have passed the ParaPro Assessment, hold an Associate’s Degree, or have completed at least 60 credits at an approved college
• Must possess or be willing to acquire the skills necessary to support any specialized programs for Special Needs students, including support of behavioral plans, strategies for autism or other identified diagnoses, or support for treatments such as ABA or activities of daily living such as feeding and toileting.
• Experience/training in working with children preferred.
• Comfort with use of standard computer applications.
• Such additions and alternatives to the above qualifications as may be appropriate and acceptable.

Summer School Success 2025: Extended School Year (ESY) Special Education Teachers

The filling of this position is based upon continued funding in the Board of Education budget.
 
Note: Teachers dually certified in TESOL, Bilingual Education or ESL, with experience in Sheltered Instruction or fluency in a language other than English, will be given preference for all Stamford Public School positions.
 
GENERAL STATEMENT:
Teachers must commit to work all  4 weeks with the option to work 6 weeks to teach in the Summer School Program. Special education teachers in specialized programs will work with students in the TEAM, CORE, or ASD programs. A competent special education teacher understands growth and development, demonstrates knowledge of what is to be taught and facility in the basic skills and helps students to develop positive self-concepts. The special education teacher stimulates the independence of each student as a learner, effectively assesses student needs and progress and plans instruction to achieve selected objectives, involving those appropriate for exceptional students. The special education teacher accomplishes these objectives through effective communication with students, parents, and colleagues and through the use of appropriate techniques and materials in a positive climate where time, space and equipment are effectively organized for instruction. In addition, the special education teacher meets professional responsibility for continuing growth and fosters cooperative involvement with parents and the community. The summer school special education teacher will service the educationally disabled students who have been recommended for Extended School Year (ESY) as indicated on the current IEP.

Compensation:

Extended School Year (ESY) earnings for work done in compliance with an IEP are pensionable as long as you remain employed with Stamford Public Schools through September 1st.  The 8.25% TRB mandatory contribution will be deducted from your summer paychecks one pay period in arrears, as well as the first check of the school year.
